As a Follower of Jesus, I believe that God’s Word, the Bible is our survival guide for life. It is the one truth that has given me much needed wisdom, comfort, and strength in my journey. Love this quote by Albert Einstein, “”I am not interested in this phenomenon or that phenomenon,”I want to know God’s thoughts – the rest are mere details.”
I have learned that God’s thoughts embrace the Fruits of the Spirit and I have studied them lately to understand what they really mean and how to apply them to my own life.
LOVE is the first fruit of the spirit. LOVE has looked different for each of us in life depending on what we saw, heard, and learned growing up.
Reflecting on my life journey and what LOVE looked like from my Childhood to Adulthood. These were my examples of LOVE.
- A dad that was committed to taking care of his mentally ill wife, my mom.
- A dad that chose his family over money and personal desires.
- A mom that to the best of her ability, loved, cared, and prayed all the time for her family.
- A mom that was always looking for ways to help other people.
In my marriage, love took on a different meaning for me. I brought into my marriage stubbornness and manipulation. I would show love when my husband acted worthy of it, but when I felt he didn’t, I wouldn’t freely show my love.
It was an emotional roller coaster of observing, learning, and experiencing what loving “authentically” looks like. Learning how to look out for my husband’s interests more than my own.
Starting a family brought awareness and understanding to me that the greatest gift a father can give to his kids is to LOVE their mother. And the greatest gift a mother can give to her kids is to RESPECT their father. My husband and I have learned through much trial and error how to love and respect each other.
The precarious and sometimes painful process involved each of us becoming aware of and removing our own fleshly desires that were self-seeking and filled with wrong motives. This included forgiving and rebuilding trust again.
In relationships with other family members, God is teaching me another meaning of LOVE. How to love how HE loves. This has been a really tough for one for me. I am learning that even when you have felt betrayed and hurt by a person, that the greatest action is LOVE. The greatest commandment in the Bible that when we learn it, understand it, and apply it, it can do powerful things in you and through you……regardless of what the other person does or does not do. LOVE conquers ALL.
John 13:34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.
1 Peter 4:8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.
From my heart to yours,
